Position Announcement: Dean of the College of Engineering

The University of Tennessee invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Engineering. The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the college, and reports to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Salary is nationally competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The University of Tennessee is comprised of ten colleges and schools and is the state’s land grant and flagship research institution. The university enrolls approximately 27,000 students (21,000 undergraduate and 6,000 graduate and professional students.) The university is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a research university with very high research activity, and as the leading university partner in UT-Battelle, the management company for Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the university offers extraordinary opportunities for leading-edge research in science and engineering.

The College of Engineering has seven academic departments offering ten undergraduate, fourteen M.S., and twelve Ph.D. degrees, and is home to three major research centers. The college also oversees the University of Tennessee Space Institute located in Tullahoma, TN. The college’s 137 faculty members offer baccalaureate, masters, and Ph.D. degrees in all of the major engineering disciplines. The undergraduate programs, all of which are fully accredited by ABET, are nationally renowned for their quality, and are distinguished by an unusually broad level of participation in industrial co-op and internship programs and high levels of minority participation and retention. Strong collaborative connections between the college and ORNL create unique opportunities for faculty and students to interact with state-of-the-art research facilities. Approximately 1800 undergraduate and 750 graduate students are enrolled in the college. In 2007, the College’s research expenditures were approximately 27 million.

The college and its faculty are committed to (1) developing a more distinctive and diverse student body, (2) retaining and hiring an exemplary and diverse faculty, (3) obtaining and maintaining world class research and teaching facilities, (4) becoming a leading public research institution, and (5) continuing to be an outstanding economic development partner in the State of Tennessee. With a significant portion of the faculty turning over in the next few years, the greatly broadened connection with ORNL through UT-Battelle, and a strong commitment from the university administration to enhance the college, the opportunity exists for the right person to move the college to new levels of national prominence in academic and research excellence.
