New Faculty Orientation - Save the Dates

To: Deans, Directors, Department Heads
From: Sarah Gardial, Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs

I am planning an expanded new faculty orientation for the fall and wanted to make sure you save the dates on your calendars.  As in the past, there will be an all-day orientation covering broad topics on Wednesday, August 12 in the University Center.  This is the Wednesday before classes start.  Please make sure that all new faculty to UT (tenured or tenure-track) are informed of this date.  More details will be sent later.

Working with Dave Schumann and Brad Fenwick, we have also planned a full day follow up, Monday, August 17 in the Haslam Building, for additional workshops (a half day each) on teaching and research.  Last year was the first year Dave conducted the follow-up workshop on teaching, and it was VERY enthusiastically received by the new faculty.  This year we are adding the half day workshop on research, which I expect will be equally well-received.

Please let new faculty know about these two dates and try keep them open.

Finally, the third leg of the stool – service.  It is my intention to have a new faculty workshop that will cover issues related to service and, more broadly, setting priorities and managing time.  I am working towards this in the fall, but have not set dates.  More details on that to come.

Many thanks for your support in launching our new faculty in a positive fashion.
