SUBJECT: Interim Director of International Education

I have named Dr. Yang Zhong as interim director of UT's Center for International Education, effective October 9, 2006.

CIE oversees study abroad, visa, and immigration status for international students and scholars, and programming and operations for UT's International House.

I believe Professor Zhong is uniquely qualified to assume this key administrative role in advancing the university's Ready for the World International and Intercultural Awareness Initiative. He joined the UT faculty in 1992. He directed graduate studies in the Department of Political Science for six years, served as Associate Department Head, and currently chairs the Asian Studies Program. He teaches Asian politics, comparative government, and political development and organizes study abroad programs to his native country, China.

I have asked Dr. James Gehlhar, previous CIE director, to concentrate his considerable expertise on three functions essential to the success of Ready for the World. He will build international partnership agreements, prepare students to compete for prestigious external scholarships, and write grant proposals. I want to thank Jim for his service to UT and for his continuing work on these important initiatives.

A national search for the new permanent CIE director will begin soon.
