MemorandumTo: Faculty and Staff It is my pleasure to announce to the campus the appointment of Carolyn Hodges as Dean of the Graduate School. The appointment will be effective January 1, 2007. Dr. Hodges will be entrusted with reinvigorating the recently restored Graduate School. She will have broad authority over the direction and the composition of graduate education on the Knoxville campus. She will be charged with finding ways to increase the numbers of graduate students coming to the university, and with improving the quality of graduate programs. She will also be asked to find ways to increase diversity in our graduate student population and to initiate and assist campus efforts to find support for graduate students and graduate programs. Dr. Hodges has been a faculty member at the university since 1982. Dr. Hodges has had an exemplary academic career. She has co-authored three monographs and published many articles in collections and journals. She is an expert in 19th and 20th century German literature and has conducted research in various areas of comparative literature. She has published on foreign language education of minority and disadvantaged students and on multicultural education.
