Compensation of Faculty Members for Administrative Positions

To: Deans of All Colleges on the Knoxville Campus
From: Robert C. Holub, Provost
Subject: Compensation of Faculty Members for Administrative Positions
Date: October 15, 2007

Although colleges differ somewhat on how they choose to compensate department heads, associate department heads, and associate deans, I believe there should be some commonality of approach to ensure consistency across the campus. This memorandum is meant to establish guidelines for future appointments of administrators in colleges. It will not affect any administrative appointments that have been made prior to its promulgation.

1. Faculty members should have a base academic salary, even when they assume administrative duties. In most cases the faculty appointment remains a 9-month appointment. Salary increases should not be given on the faculty salary except in cases where the administrator (department head or assistant/associate dean) has earned the raise as a faculty member. The weight given to various categories of faculty evaluation will likely change for a faculty member who is performing administrative duties: in all likelihood service (in the form of administrative service) will become a more important area of evaluation of this particular faculty member’s performance.

2. To the base faculty salary, the dean may add two components for administrative duties:

  1. up to three ninths of the base faculty salary for summer salary
  2. an administrative stipend

3. Once the individual has left the administrative position, the compensation should revert to the base academic salary.

4. A base salary and supplements should be established for both internal and external appointments to administrative positions occupied by faculty members.
