Putting Money Where
Classes Are Needed

This fall, the Provost’s Strategic Instructional Fund, which reinvests tuition dollars and other monies into academics, was used to hire twenty new lecturers to teach high-demand courses ranging from public speaking to kinesiology to chemistry. We also employed a new tool that lets us zero in on course bottlenecks so we can address problems before they impact our students.

Resource Will Help Increase Service Learning Opportunities

Service learning is hands-on learning at its finest. It allows students to put their classroom instruction to work and gain real-world experience. It also engages students and boosts retention. Increasing service learning opportunities is one of our Top 25 initiatives. We’ve created a new resource to help interested faculty members incorporate service learning into their classes.

Rewarding Great Work

We are continuing to look for ways to reward great work in the classroom. Our first lecturer promotion process went well, and this fall we hope to offer a salary increment to meritorious full professors who are outstanding scholar-teacher-citizens.

In Search of Better Data

Measuring faculty performance is complicated. It involves collecting student feedback, getting peer evaluations, and gathering data about the many types of work faculty members do. We’re studying how we collect student and peer evaluations, and we’re searching for a database that will help us measure faculty productivity.
