
Meet the provost
John Zomchick has served as provost of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, the state’s flagship university, since 2020. A professor of English and a respected scholar of eighteenth-century literature, he joined UT in 1985 and has held a variety of leadership roles, including executive associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences and head of the Department of English.
Throughout his career, Zomchick has demonstrated a deep understanding of academia and a strong commitment to fostering excellence across the university. He served as vice provost for faculty affairs for more than five years, as interim provost, and as senior vice chancellor from 2016 to 2018. He has earned prestigious awards, including the UT National Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Award and the Lorayne W. Lester Award, in recognition of his leadership and contributions.
In his current role, Zomchick works closely with University leadership, vice provosts, faculty, and staff to enhance the academic, research, scholarly, and creative programs at UT Knoxville. He helps shape university policies, supports faculty development, and ensures that students have access to high-quality learning opportunities.
Zomchick is deeply committed to mentorship, collaboration, and community engagement. His guidance strengthens the university’s mission, promotes innovation, and encourages excellence in teaching, research, and service. Under his leadership, UT continues to grow as a vibrant academic community, preparing students to succeed in a rapidly changing world.
