College of Engineering Dean Janis Terpenny to Return to Faculty

Colleagues,

Janis Terpenny will be stepping down as dean of the Tickle College of Engineering effective at the end of the academic year on June 30, 2021.

Dr. Terpenny plans to return to the faculty to pursue her research in engineering design, smart manufacturing, and engineering design education.

In her time as dean, Dr. Terpenny has strengthened partnerships with industry, community, alumni, and the UT Space Institute. She served on the steering committee for visioning and planning of the Oak Ridge Institute. She has worked closely with the Office of Advancement to build and enhance relationships with donors, including a major gift that will name UT’s newest engineering building. She has worked across the college in recruiting and advancing exceptional faculty, staff, and students. She has represented her college and the university through her service nationally on the American Society for Engineering Education’s Engineering Deans Council Diversity and Public Policy Committees and on the Board of Trustees of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineering, and locally in her volunteer work as a commissioner for the Tennessee Technology Corridor Development Authority and her service to United Way of Greater Knoxville.

I will quickly confer with the faculty about the search for a new dean so we can gather input and move forward in launching the search.
